Metabolic Syndrome: The Precursor to Heart Disease 50% of Those Over 60 Face

When I speak to groups and organizations, I often start out by asking people, "How many of you have personally dealt with or have a family member that has dealt with cancer, diabetes, or heart disease?"

I would like to say that only a few hands are raised, but unfortunately every hand in the crowd goes up. There is a commonality in all of these issues: there is a process called "The Metabolic Syndrome" that happens within our bodies due to several long-term lifestyle factors: high stress, a processed American diet, poor sleep, and lack of exercise leading to increased belly fat (a waist circumference over 35 for women / 40 for men - this is not pant size), high triglycerides, low HDL (good) cholesterol, high blood pressure, fasting blood sugar over 100, and body mass index over 30. Metabolic Syndrome is diagnosed when at least 3 of these factors are present.

Here Is The Secret

As a doctor, Metabolic Syndrome is like looking at a road map that is pointing towards chronic disease. It is one of the many reasons Americans are faced with dying at an early age or deal with long-term suffering in the aging process. It is the precursor to heart disease, cholesterol issues, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cancer, hypertension, type-2 Diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and dementia. Having Metabolic Syndrome physiology increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 3 to 4 times. The scary thing is that at least 1 in 3 Americans have Metabolic Syndrome: 40% of those 40, 20% of those over 20 years of age, and 50% of those over 60.

Metabolic Syndrome can be identified in an exam process. When it is identified, we can put together a plan to tackle it. Metabolic Syndrome can be reversed, lowering risk factors for so many issues! The key is knowing that if it is affecting your physiology, action needs to be taken. What does that action look like? We need to address how you eat, how you move, and how you think. These 3 components of health need to be working together to turn the roadmap of someone's health in a new direction.
